Historically, an "encore" or a “bis” is a short, brilliant piece played at the end of a concert to showcase a performer’s virtuosity and thank the audience. These pieces are designed in that spirit—they are light, athletic, and meant to be a bit of a "show off" for the performer.

The violin encores are reworkings of movements from my Opus 2 for chamber orchestra (2012). While the original 2013 violin encore began this process, the 2025 revision makes the full set of three available for the first time. By stripping away the orchestral layers, the essential structure becomes clearer. While the music remains fast and dense, the reduction allows the underlying diatonic material to emerge as a subtle gravitational pull against the more volatile, chromatic surface. Each encore is designed to be performed independently; they may also be presented as a complete set or in various combinations.
